Expansion of the Pottendorf line
Capacity expansion and modernization of the southern line
The Pottendorf line is an important railroad line between Vienna Meidling and Wiener Neustadt, which serves as an alternative to the classic southern line. In order to meet the increasing demands of passenger and freight transport, the line is being extensively modernized and extended to two tracks. This project aims to increase capacity, shorten journey times and improve passenger comfort.
Construction work began in 2015 and is due to be completed by 2029. A central element of the project is the creation of a continuous double track over a length of around 50 kilometers. The Hennersdorf, Achau, Münchendorf and Ebreichsdorf stations have already been modernized. The double-track extension between Vienna and Wiener Neustadt was completed at the end of 2023. Further upgrades, such as the modernization of Wampersdorf station and the new construction of Ebenfurth station, are planned until 2029.
More efficiency for local and long-distance transport
The extension of the Pottendorf line will significantly reduce travel times and increase the frequency of local services. The additional capacity will allow more trains to run per hour, making the line more attractive for both commuters and freight traffic. The project will also create a better connection to the business location of southern Austria, as the line represents an important link between Vienna and the Wiener Neustadt-Burgenland industrial axis.
