Making rail transport more attractive throughout Austria
The ÖBB station offensive is one of Austria’s largest infrastructure programmes for modernizing and making stations more attractive. Since 1997, numerous main stations and stops have been extensively renovated or newly built in order to improve user-friendliness, accessibility and intermodal connections.
Originally, 43 stations and 50 stops were planned for modernization, but due to rising costs, the focus was placed on 20 central stations with an investment volume of over 1 billion euros. Vienna Central Station in particular was developed into one of the most important transport hubs in Europe and forms the heart of this initiative.
Sustainability and comfort
The modernizations focus on energy-efficient building structures, improved user-friendliness through barrier-free design and the integration of new technologies for passenger information and ticketing. New station concepts also offer more shopping and recreational opportunities for travelers.
